Description
Group of three nineteenth-century glass oil lamps with wonderful make-do repairs. The one with a handle has a particularly masterful tinsmith repair: a metal superstructure surrounds the glass base and fastens securely to the broken edges. The other two reveal household ingenuity and thrift: the teardrop lamp has a crimped metal and plaster replacement base, while the honeycombed pressed glass lamp has picked up one cut from a painted block of wood. In each case, the repairer devised a design intervention that would make a future topple and break far less likely.
Whether relit as lamps or repurposed as bud vases, each stands as an evocative work of found sculpture.
