Sold: Hand-Carved Lamps

Pair of folk art lamps / carved wood / Upstate New York / c. 1910s

Pair of extraordinary hand-carved wooden lamps, c. early twentieth century. Made by an unknown hand and likely only two of a kind, these matched lamps would be ideal lighting for bedside tables or mounted to the wall. The sculptural, organic design is timeless and fresh: Although the original electrical elements dated them to the turn of the last century (the sockets were backed with mica) one could imagine the lamps bearing the name of a major midcentury or contemporary designer.

The form of each lamp is angular, yet sinuous, with edges chamfered and smooth, the bases rounded. The lamps each face different directions, with hand-carved wooden shades fixed at right angles intended to face a wall. Alternatively, the pair could easily be mounted to a wall as sconces, with the shades directing light down or up, depending on preference. Each have been rewired with new toggle sockets and reproduction cloth-covered wire to match the original components.

The products of countless hours of labor, the pair of lamps embody the purest kind of design, motivated only by inspiration, craftsmanship, and the pleasure of creation.
