Sold: Cobalt Blue Decanter

Cobalt blue decanter / cobalt blue glass / Bristol, England / c. mid-19th century

Bristol glass hand-blown cobalt blue decanter with cut-glass faceted stopper, c. mid-19th century. Bristol maintained an import monopoly on cobalt oxide in England, which the company employed to create the bold, rich color of “Bristol Blue” in this decanter, an exceptional example of the glassmaker’s art. Handmade, the decanter has a pontil on the base which was ground down. The base also shows appropriate shelf wear fitting the age of the bottle.
