Sold: Wonderful Discovery
“Wonderful Discovery” antique trompe l’oeil book box, c. 1870s. Likely its original purpose was as a candy container, and one can imagine a child’s disappointment with a gifted book turning to delight when it revealed sweets. The boards of the book box are made of glass pasted inside with paper, while the spine and “pages” are marbled paper on cardboard. It is in very good condition for such an ephemeral object, with one crack in one of the boards (the lid, though it is structurally sound). A fun hideaway place and a rare piece of Americana.
Condition
Very good condition for age, with one crack in one of the boards (the lid, though it is structurally sound), some bends in the marbled paper pages, minor edge wear, and detached ribbon which held the lid. Displays well.
