Sold: Ear Trumpet

Ear trumpet / tin / c. mid-19th century

Early tinsmith-made ear trumpet in old black paint with original velveteen handle, c. mid-19th century. The antique hearing aid may seem primitive, but you may find it surprisingly effective (though perhaps a bit more obstrusive than modern devices). Great sculptural form with aged tin surface. It was likely made by a tinsmith who added the inventive device to his standard inventory of tin plates, cups, and boxes, often sold by itinerant salesmen traveling house to house in rural America. I would have liked to hear the hard (of hearing) sell that landed this ear trumpet with its first user.
