Sold: Owl Album Cover

Antique Victorian scrapbook album cover, c. 1870s. Elaborately embossed and painted paperboard. Bold and whimsical Aesthetic movement design, with all manner of creatures, from the distinctive gilded owl on his perch to the fox on the chase. The colors are stunning. Under those embossed silver stars, the saturated blue pigment has such richness and depth it almost seems like the night sky itself. Reverse side has a Victorian tradecard pasted onto the board. The scrapbook itself has long vanished, but its luminous and delightfully eccentric cover remains with us.
