Description
Exceptional antique architectural Aesthetic Movement terra cotta chimney pot, c. 1880s.
The hand-sculpted form was created by the Boston Architectural Terra Cotta Company, Lewis & Lane, in South Boston, Massachusetts. One of the firm’s notable commissions was the grand fireplace in the entry hall of the Eustis Estate, built in 1878 (photo: Historic New England). Pictured are advertisements for the firm published in the “American Architect & Building News” (1881) and in the J. & J.G. Low Art Tile catalog (1884).
Exquisitely detailed, the substantial piece holds its own as a work of sculpture, though the pot would also work well repurposed as an indoor planter or as an umbrella stand. In any case, the architectural element is an important example of late nineteenth-century American design.
