Sold: Stone Di Sculpture

Dice sculpture  / painted stone / c. 1920s

Large antique folk art di sculpture, probably soapstone, c. early 20th century. The carved black stone is painted with gold pips. The cube has one cleaved corner, allowing the di to stand up on its end as if its weight had punctured a hole in the table. Its visible heft and simple form make it a magnetic object and — perhaps due to its failure to land on a number — the piece has the dynamism of a di in mid-roll.
