Sold: Smoke Stack Patent Model

Patent model of a locomotive smoke stack / sheet metal / c. 1878
This meticulous and sculptural patent model represents the most iconic profile in 19th century industrialization: the train locomotive smoke stack. George W. Turner of St. Paul, Minnesota, filed his application for “Locomotive smoke-stacks” on October 5, 1878, and was granted Patent No. 209,994 on November 19, 1878. Turner’s new design promised “new and useful improvements” and could be outfitted for wood-burning and coal engines alike. Intended to represent the features of his invention, Turner’s sturdily-made sheet metal and wire mesh model is detailed down to the rivets. The patent model includes its original tag, which was backed in paper board and plastic to preserve it. A rare patent model for the railroad collector, but also a compelling work of industrial sculpture.
