Save Time, Lengthen Life
Remington typewriter advertising mirror / celluloid, tin, glass / c. 1910s
Miniature mirror advertising the Remington Standard Typewriter, c. 1910s. The piece was likely given out to female secretaries or typists to tout the latest technology in business machines championed for their efficiency and speed. Sized to fit in the palm of one’s hand and likely intended for placement on a desk, Remington’s trade stimulator reflects time passing as measured in its owner’s visage. With the bold motto, “To Save Time is to Lengthen Life,” technology is presented as a means to slow the aging process reflected back in the mirror and a typewriter held forth as capable of creating time itself.
