Sold: Camp Outfits Catalog

Rare “Camp Outfits” 1931 catalog from the David T. Abercrombie Company. 62 pages and profusely illustrated. The catalog is replete with fantastic images of camping, hunting, and outdoor gear, from elaborate tents suitable for desert caravans to clothing appropriate for every weather and clime.

David Abercrombie was the original founder of the legendary supplier of sporting and excursion goods, Abercrombie & Fitch, but left the company in 1907, selling his share to his partner Ezra Fitch. The business partners had disagreed about the direction of the company: Abercrombie sought to preserve the company as a supplier to elite outdoorsmen, while Fitch desired to make the product appeal to more general audience. Abercrombie carried on his business equipping well-heeled hunters and adventurers under his own name from catalogs like the one seen here. He died in 1931 and this may have been one of the last catalogs issued.

The catalog is a window into another more adventuresome time but also a valuable sourcebook for contemporary designers, depicting outdoor clothing, shoewear, and accessories, among all manner of Abercrombie’s other distinctive and arcane gear.
