Description

Rare and early quack medicine painkiller bottle with scarce original label promising to “Drive Out the Demons” as depicted bedeviling a fellow with miniature torture devices. Although it may have conquered pain, no doubt the medication introduced a new demon in the form of an opiate addiction.

Although Wolcott’s demon-tortured man has become an iconic brand in nineteenth century advertising, I was unable to find a single bottle with an intact label.

With the label applied upside-down — most easily read as you hurriedly downed the medication — I mounted the bottle on a miniature stand (unattached but held fast by wire arms).
