On the Bowery Painting
Painting of confrontation on the Bowery, NYC / oil on board / c. 1940s
Description
In this dark postwar scene by an unknown artist, a cop appears about to accost a homeless disabled veteran outside of the Bowery Mission in the Lower East Side. Although the composition of this oil on board is powerful, it may have been accidental — at some point the painting was cut down, possibly with the missing portion cut to be recycled as another painting. Now with two pieces of the original board remaining, the altered work stands on its own merits as a compelling found object.
