Souvenir of Washington, D.C. top hat made from destroyed American currency. The label reads:

Made of U.S. National Greenbacks, redeemed and macerated at the U.S. Treasury. Estimated $2,000.

Macerated currency figures hold a niche of their own in American folk art and come in a seemingly endless variety of forms. Dating from the 1870s or ’80s, this is a rare early example.

Aged patina with delicate hat band.
