Sold: Miniature Pianist

Miniature silhouette of a pianist  /  cut paper / c. 1910s

Remarkable miniature scissor-cut silhouette of a pianist, c. early 20th century. No doubt, the artist was a maestro of the craft: the tiny figure of the piano player is no more than 3/4 of an inch wide and 1/3 of an inch tall, hardly larger than a clef on a printed sheet of music. The piece is signed, but the signature is difficult to make out. The silhouette is framed in an oval molding with a deep cove, effectively drawing in the eye to the minuscule musician. Gallery label on the reverse reads “L.S. Ayres & Co. Indianapolis.”
