Sold: Masonic Apron

Antique Masonic apron, c. mid to late 19th century. Elaborate gold bullion embroidery and fringe, with a fantastic representation of the all-seeing eye, the “Eye of Providence.” This rather exasperated looking eye with its semicircular glory below it was meant to remind Freemasons that God is always watching man’s actions and thoughts and symbolized his position above all as the Great Architect of the Universe.

The apron is in a beautiful state of decay: its silk shredded, bullion unraveling, colors faded. No belt remains. The piece would be beautiful hung as-is on a wall or shadowboxed.

A mysterious and evocative fraternal object made exquisite at the hands of time.
