Description
Mid-19th century watch hutch, as found, with cut paper portrait of Abraham Lincoln inserted in the pocket watch rest over a miniature shaving mirror. Fly-specked and faded, Lincoln’s image appears untouched since the Civil War, when it was likely cut by a supporter from a broadside or newspaper. A label on the wooden base indicates Boston manufacture.
As a piece that would have stood on a bedside table or dresser, the altered watch hutch is an evocative personal object and ephemeral political statement reflecting an important period in American history.
