Sold: Liberty Bicycle Bell

Bicycle bell / nickel-plated brass / Liberty Bell Company / c. 1900

Rare and exceptional wind-up and push-button activated nickel-plated brass and iron bicycle bell, c. turn of the 20th century. The piece is in great condition and excellent working order, complete with handle bar mounting hardware. The ornate nickel-plated brass bell — which screws over the mechanism — is beautifully cast in an intricate neoclassical-inspired design, recalling an inverted coffered dome with an egg-and-dart border. One winds the mechanism by turning the bell itself clockwise. Depress the button and the device rings clear as…a bell. Provided its good and wound, it will continue to do so for as long as you like. The crisp, bright sound matches the crisp, bright aesthetic condition of this rare survivor.

The bell is marked on its underside: “The Liberty Bell Co. Bristol, CT. U.S.A.” Edward Rockwell founded the Bristol Bell Company in Bristol, Connecticut in 1898 as a competitor to the New Departure Bell Company. The name was changed to the Liberty Bell Company in 1899. It was absorbed by the New Departure Company in 1905.

A wonderful example of American craftsmanship and design, as well as a scarce addition to any antique bicycle collection.
