Sold: Flag Mold
American flag chocolate mold / metal alloy / c. 1910s
Antique chocolate mold of the star-spangled banner in relief, c. early twentieth century. While the interior is shiny with crisp stripes and stars, the dull-gray exterior is more of a proto-flag, the forms melting together. Made between the Spanish American War and World War I, and at a time of imperial ambition abroad and increased suspicion of new immigrants at home, the evocative object was created as the mold for what it meant to be American was being recast.
