Description
This early mail-order catalog from an NYC firm offers oddball, titillating and eyebrow-raising material that no upstanding Victorian dry goods merchant would dare sell. Bound in printed salmon wrappers, the catalog features nearly a hundred pages of illicit treatises on topics such as witchcraft, necromancy, and “Love-Making Secrets,” as well as novel inventions such as a rubber necktie and the “Mysterious Planchette” for contacting the departed (a Ouija board competitor), sexy chromolithographs, and so forth. The work is full of wonderful illustrations and eccentric Victorian typography.
