Cast Iron Branches

Naturalistic tree-form shelf brackets / cast iron / c. 1850s

Rare pair of antique shelf brackets in a scarce “oak branch” design, c. mid-nineteenth century. Exquisite form and design. Early and quality cast iron is marked for its detail and smoothness — the rough edges seen in contemporary cast iron were ground down by hand in nineteenth-century production. From their figural oak leaves to acorns, these brackets are beautifully detailed and so smooth and naturalistic that they would seem to grow from the wall. A scarce and elegant early design of which I struggled to find another example.
