Sold: Bearded Marble Bust

Bust of a bearded man / marble / c. 1880s

Antique hand-carved marble bust of a bearded man, c. third quarter 19th century. With the naked torso and squared-off base, the bust is exquisitely carved in a style reminiscent of Hiram Powers (1805-1873). At under twelve inches tall, the bust is an unusually small size, demonstrating the skill of its unknown sculptor. An exceptional example of Victorian American sculpture.

Measurements

10.5 inches tall
5.5 inches wide
4.25 inches deep

Condition

Very good antique condition with one small chip to base and typical discolorations to aged marble. Having probably spent its life in an artist’s studio, the bust is lightly speckled with what appears to be a varnish. If desired, the sculpture could be cleaned, though the bust’s antique surface tells its 150-year story.
