Description
Wonderful pair of early tinted spectacles, c. 1830s. The lenses are a rich shade of green and the frame design is inventive and sculptural, with hinged temple extensions. These curious specs were not originally designed as sunglasses but rather as corrective lenses under the belief that green or blue-tinted glass aided eyesight. Making them especially unusual, the specs retain their original gilded and tooled-leather case, of a kind that seldom survives. An exceptional example of early nineteenth-century eyeglasses.
