Description
Rare early “wig” chase-decorated steel spectacle case, dated 1764. The case was designed to hold eyeglasses that had shorter temples so as not to interfere with one’s powdered wig, hence the term “wig spectacles.” The inscription indicates it once was carried by George Brown, who lived in Ordsall, England (present-day greater Manchester), served as the sheriff for the County of Nottingham, and lived in the twelfth-century Ordsall Hall, which survives to this day as a museum.
The case is not only beautifully wrought, it’s also a personal, every-day object with a palpable connection to the past.
Recently acquired from an important private collection of antique eyewear.
