Sold: Scissor Candle Holder

Wall-mounted adjustable candle holder with retractable scissor extension / wrought iron / c. 1830s

Utilitarian light sources of this kind were typically used in workshops by craftsmen, such as cobblers, who, depending on the darkness of their workspace, may have required candlelight during both day and night. Artificial light was expensive in early nineteenth century America and crowded urban commercial districts often occluded natural light. As a craftsman shifted his daily workspace, the portable light from the adjustable fixture could be customized to suit the project. This simple candle holder extended both the workday, work setting, and capabilities of the worker toiling under its narrow pool of light.
