Sold: Salesman Sample Washing Machine

Salesman sample manual washing machine / painted iron / c. 1890s

At under 12 inches high, this miniature late nineteenth century mechanical washing machine was likely carried by a travelling door-to-door salesman to demonstrate the benefits of the allegedly labor-saving device. Designed with a simple gear mechanism, the washer operates by hand-cranking a wheel which spins the interior agitator, operating under the lid and out of sight. Still requiring significant manual exertion and questionably effective, it does not seem likely the newfangled device would save the purchaser much effort.
