Sold: Palace of Gold

“Palais d’Or” speakeasy sign / painted wood / c. 1920s

Hand-painted wooden advertising for the “Palais d’Or” — apparently a rural New Hampshire nightclub — c. 1920s. Appearing to date to the Prohibition era, it seems likely that this backwoods Palais of Gold likely offered more than dinner and dancing. Perhaps it was the smuggled Candadian whiskey that lured customers down Old Nashua Road to Mt. Rock? The sign is by the brush of an amateur painter, which only enhances the classy mystique of that now long-shuttered Palace of Gold.
