Sold: Carved Wooden Beast

Antique folk art carved wooden beast, c. mid-19th century. Perhaps meant to represent a bear, the creature’s long hair, anthropomorphic brow and elegant gait suggest more of an imaginary beast than a living one. Original surface with gray and red paint. Paint loss, scratches and significant chips indicate the wooden beast may have been a child’s toy, perhaps for generations. Found in New Hampshire.
