Sold: Bluebird Weathervane

Folk art weathervane with heart and bird / painted wood, tin, and lead / c. 1920s

Whimsical homemade folk art weathervane with a charming subject — the “Bluebird of Happiness” perhaps? As the weathervane spins, the painted tin heart appears to follow the bluebird at its other end. However, the heart’s larger shape makes it the primary windcatcher and it in fact directs the bird. The weathervane is weighted with lead so it can spin freely in the changing breeze. I had my blacksmith make a custom iron wall mount for the piece (included).

Condition

Good antique condition with wear and patina from many, many years spinning on a rooftop. The paint is just about worn away from weathering.

Measurements

Approximately 18 inches long
