Sold: Workwear Match Safe
Rare antique pewter figural pocket match safe in the form of workwear pants, apparently blue jeans, c. 1880s. Though only three inches tall, the match safe is detailed down to the buckle back, suspender buttons, and even the weave in the denim. The bottom of the hinged lid reads “Pat. Nov 9 1886” and at the time, these Levis style riveted pants would have been called “waist overalls.” The top of the lid is hand-inscribed “C.H. Latham, Lancaster, Mass.” (From a little research, Mr. Latham was a poultry farmer, and was known for his photographic portraits of his birds.) The match holder is worn in smooth like an old pair of jeans with just the right amount character. It’s in great, usable condition, and ready for your pocket.
