Sold: Wooden Vertebrae

Antique folk art carved wooden vertebrae-like chain, probably a sailor’s whimsy, c. late 19th century. The flexible chain is constructed of small, perfectly carved links of mahogany, which slide and lock together, forming a serpentine sculpture reminiscent of the spine of a fish. The mysterious piece is beautiful when displayed on the wall or suspended inside a glass dome. Found in Maine in an old estate.
