Sold: Witchy Hosiery Box
Why is it that antique hosiery brands always have the best labels? Ipswich Hosiery box c. 1920. Salem, MA is known for its witches, but Ipswich holds the distinction of the home of the last person who charged another with witchcraft, Lucretia Brown against Daniel Spofford, in 1875. Spofford’s alleged crime of mind control and “mesmerism” was thrown out in court in Salem two hundred years after that city’s infamous witch trials. Perhaps this North Shore company sought to harness vestiges of local witchcraft with this label, bewitching socks to fly off the haberdashery shelves.
