Sold: Urban Hunters

Framed photograph of hunters astride automobile with quarry / silver gelatin photograph / c. 1920s

Original silver gelatin photograph of armed hunters returning from their war with wildlife, c. 1920s. Guns in the air, their sedan laden with the bodies of dead deer, the hunters make a triumphal homecoming. The urban, commercial setting (probably Montreal) stands in sharp contrast to the wilderness from which they have have returned. The gleeful expressions, the flaunted weapons, the closeness of death, the brutality and excess of their hunt — here situated in a workaday urban setting — all seem to warn of a dangerous threat beyond what is passable by Buick. The wilderness encroaches on this scene, and though the forest floor is littered with shotgun shells, it remains fearsome and unconquerable in the mind.
