Description

This fantastical folk art clock case (with dial hole replaced by a mirror) is without question the most extraordinary piece of Tramp Art I’ve handled.

Composed of carved and cut pieces of wood, the body is layered with a jungle of vegetation, detailed down to striations in leaves and individually-cut flower petals. Above, an architectural cityscape takes form, with stepped ziggurat-form pyramidal structures set before an openwork lattice recalling mountain ranges, all centered on a palm tree.

With one drawer in front, the case is open at the reverse to accommodate a shelf clock, since replaced by a mirror.

Often made from repurposed cigar boxes, Tramp Art is a vernacular art form popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tramp Art often takes on strikingly modern architectonic forms, despite often being more than a century old.

This work is an extraordinary example, and all the more so in that its elaborate and fine carvings have survived intact.
