Sold: Tin Ear Trumpet

Ear trumpet / tin / c. mid-19th century

Early tinsmith-made ear trumpet, Pennsylvania, c. mid-19th century. The antique hearing aid may seem primitive, but you may find it surprisingly effective (though perhaps a bit more obstrusive than modern devices). Great sculptural form with raw tin surface. The piece comes apart in two pieces, allowing for repositioning of the talk end as desired. It was likely made by a tinsmith who added the inventive device to his standard inventory of tin plates, cups, and boxes, often sold by itinerant salesmen travelling house to house in rural America. I would have liked to hear the hard (of hearing) sell that landed this ear trumpet with its first user.
