Large framed photograph of a group of theatrical young men / silver gelatin print in oak frame / c. 1890s

Antique large-format silver gelatin print studio photograph of a band of theatrical young men, probably students at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, c. 1890s. How about that guy in his destroyed lucky felt hat? With their distinctive and jaunty outfits, one might imagine they were involved with theater, but I think it more likely the photo reflects each of their eccentric personal styles. Typically group studio photos of this period were stiff and somber affairs, but this picture has a strikingly natural and casual quality, emphasized by the men depicted chest-up rather than the customary full-body capture. Untouched in original oak frame. Unusual large size, measuring over two feet wide and two feet tall. Found in Amherst, MA.
