Sold: The Finger

Probably the strangest and most thought-provoking piece of folk art I’ve ever found: hand-carved wooden finger fashioned from a shovel handle, c. 1940s. I imagine it was a lonely, cold winter when the fellow broke his snow shovel and decided to pass the time whittling at its remains. The finger is lifelike and carved with skill. Intentionally or not, the piece “points” to a compelling critique of free will: Who or what holds the handle?
