Squirrel Mansion
Large architectural animal cage / tin, iron / c. fourth quarter 19th century
Description
Wonderful folk art tinsmith-made Victorian “squirrel cage” taking the form of a mansard-roofed house with cupola. One imagines the owner of the cage commissioning the piece in the form of his own home as a residence for his favorite rodent. At three feet long, the stately five-square foot home boasts a staircase, multiple levels, dormered windows, and a revolving cylindrical workout room for hamster-wheeling. Found in Vermont.
Condition
Very good with minor oxidization, dents, and wear to paint. An extraordinary survivor given its size and fragile architectural details.
Measurements
23.5 x 35.5 x 16.75 inches.
