Sold: Soapstone Inkwell
Antique hand-carved soapstone inkwell, c. 1840s. The piece has tumbled through many a desk and fallen under many a pen, and has scratches and chips all of which add to its evocative character. A note on the bottom indicates the soapstone originated at a Francestown, New Hampshire quarry. How many creative quills dipped drank from its black well, composing so many lines ending in dust? But time-tumbled through the years, this stone resevoir remains, a contemplative object for the writer’s desk or bookshelf.
