Sold: Slippery Elm Lozenges
Apothecary advertising tin / tin lithography & glass / c. 1880s
Rare antique Victorian glazed “Slippery Elm Lozenges” advertising tin from an druggist or general store, c. 1880s. Fantastic over-the-top lettering with intricately patterned decorative flourishes and borders, all on a bright yellow ground. The arched window inset in the front of the large tin was meant to show store patrons the five pounds of appealing slippery lozenges “For Coughs, Colds, Hoarseness, Sore Throats and all Irritation of the Throat Bronchial Tubes and Lungs.” Henry Thayer & Co. Chemists of Cambridgeport, MA manufactured the remedy.
The large tin is not only a handsome piece of 19th century advertising, its glass window also allows for it to be repurposed as a display case for smaller objects.
