Sold: Slate Chinese Checkers

Folk art Chinese checkers game board / carved slate / c. mid- to late 19th century

Exquisite antique hand-carved slate Chinese checkers game board with period leather pouch containing colorful glazed clay marbles, likely Pennsylvania, c. third quarter 19th century. Alone, the slate gameboard is a stark, otherworldly work of art, but with the dots of brightly-colored handmade marbles, it comes alive as a dynamic (and playable) game surface. The piece was likely made by a stone cutter in his free time for his family.

Condition

Very good antique condition, with a few small scratches and tiny edge chips. The leather pouch shows its age and is on the way to coming apart, though it readily holds the collection of marbles found with the board.
