Sold: Silk Bird

Folk art composition of a bird  /  cut fabric / c. 1850s

Antique folk art bird composed of tiny cut pieces of colored fabric mounted in early lemon gold frame, from an old Vermont estate, c. mid-19th century. Striking composition and imaginative technique. The minute pieces of fabric give the piece a three-dimensional quality, and though it may be preserved behind glass, the material nevertheless makes the piece visually tactile. The medium works especially well with a bird as subject and captures the sheen and texture of feathers with verisimilitude. Truly a wonderful and whimsical piece of American folk art.

Condition

Very good antique condition. I have not had the piece out of the frame.
