Description
Rare early “wig” spectacle cases made of tortoiseshell, likely English and dating to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Sold individually. The cases were designed to hold delicate eyeglasses — also made of shell — which had shorter temples so as not to interfere with one’s powdered wig, hence the term “wig spectacles.”
The shell cases are exquisitely made and in excellent condition considering their age, with silver banding and cartouche, silver hardware, and flip-tops. With the rich color and translucent depth of the tortoiseshell, each glows in the light. They are extraordinary survivors considering the fragility of their delicate shell casings.
Recently acquired from an important private collection of antique eyewear.
