Sold: Serpent Cup
Antique folk art carved wooden cup encircled by a snake, probably an Odd Fellows fraternal ritual object, c. late 19th century. The piece is handsomely carved from one piece of wood — apparently pine — and painted silver with a crimson interior. The green snake has little glass black beads for eyes. The origin is unknown, but the carving seems like it would be an Odd Fellows fraternal prop referencing Adam and Eve’s serpent. A curious and evocative folk art carving with a tempting subject. Found in Massachusetts.
