Description

Exceptional sailor-made folk art wooden chain carved from a single piece of wood, c. mid-nineteenth century. Old green paint with untouched dry surface. The chain terminates in a heart, a motif said to represent a sweetheart left behind on land. These carving were often presented as gifts to loved ones upon the sailor’s return. Found in New Hampshire.

Good with a fine original patina.
