Antique Victorian “railroad” or “carriage” glasses intended for wear when traveling by rail to prevent airborne locomotive cinders from endangering the eyes, rare circular-lens form, c. mid-19th century. Striking and sculptural design with a brass frame with folding side panels and pale blue-tinted circular lenses. Fully-functional with extendable temples. One of the boldest and most inventive frame designs in history. Recently acquired from an important private collection of antique eyeglasses.
