Rolling Chess Board
Portable chess board / wood veneer, canvas / c. 1900
Rare portable wooden chess board which rolls into a cylinder, c. early 20th century. Given they were meant for travel, these boards rarely survive, and this example is in excellent, usable condition. The board is constructed with a black canvas backing onto which thin pieces of veneer are mounted, segmented in long strips so the board rolls like venetian blinds. The graining and color of the wood veneer is particularly beautiful. A handsome and useful object for the checkers or chess player who likes a game in a cafe or park.
Condition
Very good antique condition with a few minor chips in the veneer. The canvas backing is somewhat stiff from many decades rolled up, and though easily unrolled, the board might require a little compression to restore its ability to roll totally flat (a session or two with a coffee table book would do the trick).
Measurements
12 inches square
