Sold: Red Walking Stick

Folk art walking stick / red-painted wood / Maine / c. late 19th century

With its spiky shaft and uniform red paint, this primitive folk art cane could be a work of abstract sculpture. The piece was carried however, showing old wear and a handsome patina commensurate with frequent use. The top is inscribed with the initials of its original owner.

I had a wooden base made for the walking stick in which it stands upright, though the piece may be easily removed.

Though simple and unadorned, the cane is a strong example among the varied forms of the folk art walking stick.
