Sold: Propeller Box

“U.S. Air Service” miniature box cut from an airplane propeller / mahogany & velvet / c. 1917-1918

This repurposed plane fragment is a cut section of a mahogany propeller, in all probability from a downed SPAD S.XIII, the single-engine biplane fighter which equipped almost every American fighter squadron. During World War I, nearly thirty percent of American planes flying in Europe were shot down or crashed.  Total U.S. Air Service combat losses numbered 289 airplanes, with 235 airmen killed in action and 130 wounded. Many more would be killed in training accidents, even well after the Armistice.

Lined with sumptuous  purple velvet, the propeller box was likely made by a pilot or mechanic deployed to Europe as a gift for a sweetheart at home.
