Patent medicine advertising pin holder / tin, felt / c. 1890s

Description

Rare advertising pocket pin holder touting the benefits of “Ely’s Cream Balm” in the form of a head, c. late nineteenth century. Composed of two lithograph tin profiles on either side of thin band of felt for the pin cusion, the head is stricked with pins paining its flattened cranium, representing the ailments the patent medicine purports to cure. Its reverse side helpfully offers postage rates (which will prove invaluable if you happen to be mailing a letter in 1897).
